PRO LEVEL MATCH CHARTING SAMPLE QUESTIONS

PART I Sample Questions: This section of questions pertains to basic tennis rules and scoring.

At the end of a particular game of the first set of a tennis match, the set score is 5-4. Are the players required to switch ends of the court before starting the next game?

In a singles match between Player A and Player B, Player A served during the first game of the match. The score is now 3 games to 2 in favor of Player B. Who serves the next game?

In a particular game of a singles match between Player A and Player B, Player A is about to receive serve on the deuce side of the court. Can the current score be 15-30? Can it be 15-love? Can it be 40-15?

PART II Sample Questions: This section of questions pertains to tennis court layout and target zone notation.

What is the overall length of a tennis court, measured from baseline to baseline?

Which target zone is closest to the net?

Are the “singles alleys” wider, narrower, or the same width as the doubles alleys?

A cross-court shot that lands inside of the opponent’s side of the court at the intersection of the sideline and the baseline is referred to as a shot to what target area?

PART III Sample Questions: This section of questions pertains to Level 1 match charting conventions and nomenclature as described in the book “Standard MATCH CHARTING and NOMENCLATURE”, by Steve Clark and Dave Howell.

In a match between Player A and Player B, Player A hit a shot that bounced inside of the court on Player B’s side of the net, but Player B was not able to reach the ball before it bounced a second time. Would Player A’s shot be considered a “winner”, a “forcing shot”, a “forced error”, or an “unforced error”?

In a match chart (which would be illustrated in the actual certification exam) for a particular tennis match, the chart entries for a particular game are:
PLAYER A:      +F    +F       -B         S2T
PLAYER B:                     +F        -V

In that game, how many good point-deciding backhand shots did Player A make?

In the same game that’s charted above, how many poor point-deciding volleys did Player B make?

In the same game that’s charted above, who was serving?

In the same game that’s charted above, who won the fourth point?

In the same game that’s charted above, what was the game score after the fifth point was played? (Assume that Player A was serving that game.)
